Mission and Vision
Our mission is to advance understanding of the nature and value of nonhuman minds, with special focus on animals and AI.
Our vision is a world in which all sentient and otherwise morally significant beings are treated with respect and compassion.
We pursue these goals through research, outreach, and field-building in science, ethics, and policy.
At present, the world contains quintillions of animals across millions of species. In the future, it could contain an even larger number and wider range of digital minds.

Annual Reports
CMEP advances research on the nature and value of nonhuman minds by contributing funding, authorship, or both. What follows is a list of relevant outputs to which our team has contributed since the launch of CMEP in 2022, in reverse chronological order.

Annual Report 2025
2025 was a big year for CMEP. We sponsored a number of research projects and public events and saw major progress for animal and AI welfare, including engagement with AI welfare at leading AI companies. We also launched our new website.

Annual Report 2024
We are thrilled to report that 2024 was a transformational year for CMEP, as we became a permanent center with a $6 million endowment, released widely covered work related to animal and AI welfare, and initiated a number of exciting projects on topics ranging from interspecies welfare comparisons to nonhuman legal personhood.
