Does consciousness have a biological basis and if so, does that preclude consciousness in AI? We have to grapple with this question in order to understand whether we have obligations to our AI systems and have to take their welfare into account in moral decision making.

About the Speaker

Ned Block is Silver Professor of Philosophy at NYU working in the philosophy of perception and the foundations of neuroscience and cognitive science. Before coming to NYU he taught at MIT for 25 years.
